O'Neil entered O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while she was in high school. The contestant was able to climb to the top ten spots because of the judges' excitement for her performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for top 3, and the bottom 2. It was a shock to the judges and they suggested that people choose Melissa as the contestant with the best ability to sing. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she never placed in the third place ever again. The performance she gave on the 7th of September of 2005 was awe-inspiring that judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
